Kay had no formal art training, but as a student of biology and bacteriology in her youth, enjoyed producing the detailed diagrams necessary for the practical component of these subjects, and always felt that she should carry that interest further.

Kay joined the Margaret Saul School of Botanical Art, completing the beginner level in 1999 and the advanced level in 2000 and she has continued her interest in botanical art.

More recently, she has investigated the intricacies of scraperboard, developing her own style and techniques, particularly depicting natives plants, which lend themselves to this innovative medium.
